My father used to say, “The best part of my job is my walk to work.” Ignoring the obvious, rather depressing side of that statement, I liked to think that maybe he was having a bad week. On the other hand, I also like to think that my father truly enjoyed his walk to work.
My walk starts at Penn Station at 7th Ave. and 31st Street (via NJ Transit from Princeton, NJ). Depending on the crosswalk signals, I usually walk east on 31st, 30th or 29th street and make my way down Broadway to the Prophet office at 21st and Fifth Ave. Takes about 20 minutes. Though it’s a relatively short walk, I am always fascinated by what I see, hear... even smell. I like to take it all in… the color, texture, pattern, people, fashion... the rhythm of this little section of the city. This city is always changing, but a lot stays the same. Stores come and go, buildings torn down, new buildings going up. I even see a lot of the same people in the same places at the same time going about their routines. There are times when I have to turn it off, zone out, listen to music, but more often than not, I can’t help to see something new or to see something in a new way.
There are a lot of best parts of my job, it’s actually hard to quantify. Every day has its ups and downs... but my walk to the office can be a very inspirational part of my day.
